Barber Dime
Barber Dime
At first glance, the name of Barber Dime might appear a little puzzling. Was there ever an American dime featuring a person who cut hair? Actually, the name refers to Charles Barber, the mint engraver who designed this and some other American coins.
On the obverse side of barber dime is a short-haired, androgynous looking Liberty wearing a cap. The classically-molded profile faces right, and wears a wreath on top of the cap. The head is surrounded by the phrase “United States of America,” plus the minting year. The design on the reverse side of barber dime is centered on the phrase “One Dime,” surrounded by an ornate wreath made of two ears of wheat. Barber dime coin was made of one part copper to nine parts silver. It may be noted that most coins of the day were made from those two metals, and the minting copper-colored or silver-colored coins was achieved by varying the proportions of the two metals. The Barber Dime was two and a half grams in mass.

If you are looking for a rare treasure, try hunting down the 1894-S Barber Dime. Only nine of them are on record, and many sources agree that only 24 were ever made. Speaking more realistically, another good minting date for collectors is the 1895-O, which is rare, but not as scarce as the 1894-S. A record $1.9 million was the selling price for a 1894-S Barber Dime in 2007. This may seem a bit low, and is at least partly due to the fact that the Barber Dime is not as sought-after as other coins. However, if you like dimes, or coins designed by Barber, an 1895-O Barber dime would definitely be a great addition to your collection. If you like, you may also buy a replica for just a few dollars, if you simply like the design.
