Roosevelt Dime

     After the so-called Mercury dimes were retired, their duties were taken over by the Roosevelt Dime, which is still used today.  Just for the record, it may be remembered that President Franklin D. Roosevelt had only passed away the previous year.  However, such was his status that he was memorialized in American currency only a year after his death.  It may also be said that Roosevelt had a special connection with the dime.  Roosevelt suffered from polio and its aftereffects for many years, and led a fund drive called the March for Dimes in order to raise money for children suffering from polio. 

     Roosevelt Dime shows a left-facing profile of the President, without eyeglasses, and from the neck up only.  The minting year and the motto “In God we Trust” are in the area where his shoulders might have been.  The word “Liberty” is also on this side.  On the reverse side of Roosevelt Dime, we see three major symbols: an olive branch for peace on the left, an oak branch for victory on the right, and a torch between and behind these branches, representing freedom.  Behind these three symbols, and partially blocked by them, we can see the famous motto “E Pluribus Unum.”  This design of Roosevelt Dime is surrounded by the phrases “United States of America” and “One Dime.”


1970 Roosevelt Dime

     This Roosevelt Dime was designed by John Sinnock. However, many people were not satisfied with the way he depicted Roosevelt.  It was suggested that a contest be held to pick a new, better design.  However, minting authorities decided that it was too late for that, so the existing design was revised instead, making Roosevelt’s face longer and more youthful-looking. 

     Being a relatively young coin, the Roosevelt dime does not carry the same value as some others.  However, it may be a good investment for collectors who are just starting, or on a tight budget.
