10 Dollar Gold Coin

10 Dollar Gold Coin

In a monetary climate that preferred coins, Eagles were created to stand for $10 and called 10 dollar gold coin.  Robert Scot designed the first Eagle.  The obverse side depicted Liberty, as was customary.  However, Scot’s version showed her facing to the right, and wearing a turban, an accessory fashionable ladies of the time liked to wear.  Stars representing the states surrounded the figure.  Once new states were added, more stars had to be stamped, too, but only up to a point.  After sixteen stars were stamped, it was realized that the coin was becoming too crowded.  The reverse side showed an eagle.  The bird held a wreath up in its beak and perched on a palm branch.  Later, the reverse was changed to closely model the country’s Great Seal.  The coins were made of a mixture of copper and gold, and had a mass of 17.5 grams.

10 dollar gold coin

The Early Eagle, like other gold coins of the United States’ early past, is quite scarce due to the temptation posed by the very precious metal of which it was made.  During the Napoleonic Era, profiteers realized that they could make a great deal of money selling gold in Europe because it had become relatively more expensive there.  Thus, many gold coins were melted down, and the metal sold overseas by unscrupulous individuals, damaging the American monetary system.  This is why the country stopped minting such coins in 1804.

Due to their beauty, rarity and remarkable history, these coins have become very popular with modern collectors.  If you would like to join the race for 10 dollar gold coin, make sure that a reliable third party has authenticated and rated the coin in question.

Coronet Eagles were designed to replace the ill-fated Early Eagles that fell victims to profiteering.  The gold content of the Coronet 10 dollar gold coin was sufficiently lower than that of its predecessors, so that unscrupulous individuals were no longer encouraged to melt the coins down for their precious metal.

Coronet Eagle (Original Head)

Christian Gobrecht, an immigrant from Germany, designed the Coronet Eagle.  His design showed a Liberty with orderly, curly hair tied up with a string of beads, and held away from her face by the eponymous coronet.  Her portrait was surrounded by stars representing the states, and was placed above the minting year of the 10 dollar gold coin.  The reverse side of the coin, as was customary, showed an eagle.  This bird carried two seemingly contradictory symbols in its talons: a cluster of arrows and an olive branch.  Actually, these images meant that the United States was ready and able to fight to defend itself if necessary (arrows), but would rather live in peace and stay out of unnecessary wars (the olive branch).  A year after it was first introduced, Gobrecht made a small improvement to the design of the obverse side.  He made sure that Liberty was placed in the center, right over the minting year, thus making for much more symmetrical and pleasing proportions.

Coronet Eagle (Modified Head)
All gold American coins are relatively rare, and of these, 10 dollar gold coin tend to be the rarest, because there was less demand for them than for Half or Quarter Eagles.  These circumstances make $10 Eagle coins quite profitable, but also quite expensive.  All things considered, however, such coins can be excellent investments if you can afford the genuine article.

Coronet Ten Dollar Gold Coin on eBay

Judging from the name, one might expect the Indian Head Eagles to have the same design as the Indian Head Quarter and Half Eagles.  This is not the case.  The design for the Indian Head Eagle was made by A. St. Gaudens, not Bela Lyon Pratt, and was much more traditional.  The design was raised, not recessed like Pratt’s unusual design.  Also, the “Indian” head in St. Gaudens’ design was not actually a Native American, but the Liberty, wearing a Native American war bonnet instead of a coronet or crown.  The reverse side showed the profile of an eagle, facing left.  The motto “E Pluribus Unum” can be seen behind the eagle’s shoulder.  We may also remark that the eagle looks rather more realistic than those shown on coin reverses based on the Great Seal.  The 10 dollar gold coin was made of copper and gold.

Indian Head Gold Coin

Minting this coin posed several technical difficulties, resulting in the creation of two discontinued, and now quite rare, varieties.  These are known as the “wire edge” and “rolled edge” varieties.  The latter is especially rare, and samples can be worth several hundred thousand dollars.  There is also the matter of the motto “In God We Trust.”  President Theodore Roosevelt caused a controversy by having the motto removed, since he thought that money could be used for bad purposes, and thus it was disrespectful to God to include His name on coins.  Still, Congress defeated him and returned the motto in 1908.

This 10 dollar gold coin is quite rare, not only because relatively few were made, but also because the government’s stores of gold coins were melted down during the Depression.  Thus, the coin is quite valuable.
