The main motivation behind the creation of Eisenhower Dollar Coin is rather strange: owners of casinos in Las Vegas wanted a silver dollar coin that could be used instead of tokens by visitors to their establishments. The resulting coin, mainly prepared by Frank Gasparro, honors both President Eisenhower and the Apollo 11 space mission. The obverse side of Eisenhower Dollar portrays a left-facing profile of the President. The other side represents, somewhat whimsically, an eagle landing on the moon, the Earth behind it in the background, made tiny by distance. The design of Eisenhower Dollar was temporarily modified for the 1975-1976 bicentennial of the United States, most notably the reverse side design. For these years, the back of the Eisenhower Dollar Coin showed the Liberty Bell, partially superimposed on the moon, interestingly both the nation’s groundbreaking past and its contemporary scientific triumphs.
Despite the optimism, or perhaps triumphalism, of Eisenhower Dollar designs, the coin itself was not so successful. It was big and heavy, which meant that people were reluctant to use it for everyday buying and selling. Even the people who requested the creation of the Eisenhower Dollar Coin—the casino owners—found that they didn’t get what they had bargained for. The Eisenhower Dollar Coins did not circulate well within the casinos, since many people who got them took them home as interesting souvenirs. After all, the Eisenhower Dollaroins were a rare sight outside casinos.
