Presidential Dollar Coin is very much the hot newcomers on the numismatic scene. The policy of the program is that four new coins will be released annually, commemorating former American Presidents in chronological order. In other words, the first year will see the release of coins showing the first four Presidents, and the second year of the program will see the launching of coins depicting the fifth to eighth Presidents.
In a manner of speaking, this presidential dollar coin will be in “competition” with the Sacagawea Dollar, since that coin’s production will not be discontinued. However, current policy is that the Sacagawea Dollar and its successive designs commemorating important parts of Native American history and culture is to outlast the program for the creation of Presidential Dollar Coin.
Despite the fact that each Presidential Dollar Coin design is to commemorate a different President, all the coins in the series have the same fundamental features. The obverse side is to be centered on a portrait of the President in question, usually from the throat or bust upwards, in frontal or three-quarters view.
On Presidential Dollar Coin the President’s name will be written above his portrait, while the motto “In God We Trust” is written below it. The reverse side design is to be centered on a depiction of the Statue of Liberty. That side will also feature the phrase “United States of America,” plus “$1,” the label for the coin’s denomination.
The program’s policies may seem rock-solid for the moment, but policy-makers still have to deal with the issue of ex-Presidents who are still alive. What will happen to coins for Presidents like Clinton and Obama? That remains to be seen.
Another important aspect of this program is its provision for the creation of pure gold coins portraying the spouses of Presidents. Numismatists have another interesting development to look forward to.
