Sacagawea Dollar Coins were formulated to supplant the embattled Anthony Dollars. Glenna Goodacre designed the obverse, and Thomas D. Rogers created the image for the other side. Goodacre’s design was meant to honor a Native American woman named Sacagawea, who aided Lewis and Clark in their explorations. She is shown looking over her shoulder, carrying an infant on her back. For his part, Rogers designed an eagle flying towards the left side of the coin. Its flying position is more realistic than heraldic. The eagle is surrounded by stars. The coin is made of copper, zinc and nickel.
Unfortunately, the Sacagawea Dollar Coin does not seem to have captured the imagination of the general public. This may not necessarily be due to any problems with its design. Rather, it may be because the coin is still “competing” with the dollar bill, which many people find lighter and easier to carry around.
Even so, the Sacagawea Dollar has its fans, particularly those who like the so-called Cheerio Dollar. Cheerio Dollars were samples of the coin given to the cereal’s manufacturer for insertion in some cereal boxes. They are different from other Sacagawea Dollars because they have more detail on the eagle’s feathers. A Cheerio Dollar can be sold for as much as $11,500—not at all bad for a coin made so recently.
In 2009 the Sacagawea Dollar is scheduled for a design change. From now on, the policy is to have a different design every year, all of them depicting important people and events in Native American history. The Sacagawea Dollar, then, is to become something like the first in a series of coins concerning Native American culture.
