The Seated Liberty Dollar is quite similar to the Gobrecht Dollar. The designs on their obverse sides are much the same, showing Liberty sitting on a rock, holding a shield in one hand and a staff topped with a liberty cap in the other. The real difference between Seated Liberty Dollar and the Gobrecht Dollar has to do with the reverse side. The Gobrecht Dollar’s reverse shows an eagle in profile, flying upwards. The Seated Liberty Dollar shows a so-called heraldic eagle. This bird is shown in full view, bearing a shield, holding arrows and an olive branch in its claws.
It must be remembered that Seated Liberty Dollar Coins, though minted for several decades, were not as commonplace as others. They were never produced in large numbers, and many of those that were ended up in Asia. Of course, the passing of time has made Seated Liberty Dollar Coins even scarcer.
The Seated Liberty Dollar is also surrounded by exciting stories. Two coins are known to have been made without the “In God We Trust” motto for a collector who had friends in the mints. Years later, armed robbers stole one of the coins from the family who then owned it. It was only recently returned (in 2004) by an honest librarian. The other one, which is not as good, sold for over a million dollars.
If you would like to own a Seated Liberty Dollar, be prepared to pay quite a bit more than you would for coins that are less rare. Also, your best bet is to look for coins minted in Carson City, denoted by the letters “CC” after the minting year.
