This Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin succeeded the Eisenhower Dollar, and honored women’s rights pioneer Susan B. Anthony, who advocated female suffrage. The obverse side of the Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin shows a right-facing profile view of this icon. The other side of the Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin is very similar to the original non-bicentennial reverse side design of the Eisenhower dollar, showing an eagle landing on the moon.
The Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin, like Anthony herself, is a pioneer in many ways. It was the first American coin to show the portrait of an actual historical woman. Susan B. Anthony Dollar also differed in size from previous dollar coins. Minting authorities knew that one reason for the unpopularity of the Eisenhower dollar was that it was considered too cumbersome, so they made the Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin smaller. Ironically, this smallness is what made the Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin unpopular in its turn, since many people found it hard to distinguish from a quarter coin. Production on the coin was soon halted. However, it was resurrected for a short period in 1999 because of modifications to vending machines which made a coin of that size more convenient. However, the Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin was retired once again. Like Anthony, the coin that honored her was destined to be a one-of-a-kind entity with a rocky history.
If you would like to collect Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coins, you might want to pay special attention to the talons of the eagle on the reverse side of the coin. Many collectors are looking for examples with full talons. This development is recent enough that official categorization/rating systems have not yet started using a ranking for it. However, it is possible that we might see one in the future, so do pay attention to the eagle’s talons because they might make your coin more valuable if you want to sell it in the future.
